Why Visit Hampi?

Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, one of the largest and wealthiest empires in medieval India. At its peak in the 15th and 16th centuries, it was reportedly one of the world's great cities. What remains today is a sprawling complex of temples, palaces, elephant stables, market streets and bath complexes scattered across a dramatic landscape of orange boulders and the Tungabhadra river.

What makes Hampi unique is the combination of archaeological richness and a living, working environment. Virupaksha Temple is still an active place of worship. The village of Hampi Bazaar sits among the ruins. And the boulder landscape itself — used for trekking, bouldering and sunset climbs — adds a completely different dimension to the site.

Best Places to Visit in Hampi

1. Vittala Temple & Stone Chariot

The Vittala Temple complex is Hampi's most celebrated monument. The stone chariot in the main courtyard is one of the most photographed images in Indian archaeology. The musical pillars of the main hall, designed to produce tonal sounds, are equally remarkable. Allow at least 2 hours for a proper visit. Hire a guide for the architectural context.

2. Virupaksha Temple

Still actively worshipped, Virupaksha Temple has been in continuous use for over 1,000 years. The main tower is a landmark visible from across the site. Visitors are welcome but dress respectfully and observe the rules of an active place of worship.

3. Hampi Bazaar

The ancient market street runs east from Virupaksha Temple. Lined with monolithic structures, this was once one of the great commercial streets of the medieval world. Today it is a mix of ruins, active buildings and local life — walk the full length and observe the scale of what once existed here.

4. Elephant Stables (Zenana Enclosure)

The Royal Enclosure area contains the Elephant Stables — a remarkably well-preserved row of chambers used to house the royal elephants — along with the Lotus Mahal, the Stepped Tank and other royal structures. This is one of Hampi's most architecturally coherent clusters.

5. Lotus Mahal

An elegant two-storied pavilion inside the Zenana Enclosure that blends Hindu and Islamic architectural styles. The arched design and proportions are some of the finest in the Vijayanagara complex. Best photographed in the morning light.

6. Matanga Hill

The highest point within the central Hampi site and one of the best sunset viewpoints. The 360-degree view takes in the Tungabhadra, Virupaksha Temple, the boulder field and the surrounding rural landscape. Start the climb well before sunset.

7. Hemakuta Hill

A hill dotted with pre-Vijayanagara temples, offering quieter and less crowded views than Matanga. The Ganesha shrines and small temple clusters here are worth exploring for anyone interested in the site's earlier layers of history.

8. Tungabhadra Riverbank

The riverbank is central to Hampi's character. The coracles (round basket boats) still used for river crossings, the sunrise light on the boulders, the ghats and the view across to the Virupapur Gadde side all make the riverside an essential part of any Hampi visit.

9. Sanapur Lake & Virupapur Gadde

Across the river from the main Hampi site, the Virupapur Gadde area (Hippie Island) has a calmer, greener character. Sanapur Lake nearby offers bouldering, swimming (seasonal) and kayaking. The contrast with the main archaeological site is part of the appeal.

10. Archaeological Museum, Kamalapuram

About 4 km from Hampi, this museum holds a well-curated collection of sculptures, coins, weapons and models from the Vijayanagara period. A visit here before or after touring the main site adds significant historical context.

2-Day Hampi Itinerary

Day 1 — Sacred Centre & Bazaar

• Early morning: Virupaksha Temple — arrive before 8am for the quietest experience.
• Morning: Walk the Hampi Bazaar street — full length, both sides.
• Late morning: Hemakuta Hill temples.
• Afternoon (3pm+): Vittala Temple complex — the best light for the stone chariot is late afternoon.
• Evening: Sunset from Matanga Hill — start climbing by 5:30pm.

Day 2 — Royal Enclosure & River

• Morning: Royal Enclosure — Lotus Mahal, Elephant Stables, Stepped Tank, Queen's Bath.
• Late morning: Kamalapuram Museum for context and artefacts.
• Afternoon: Coracle ride across the Tungabhadra and explore the Virupapur Gadde side.
• Evening: Sanapur Lake or a relaxed riverside walk as the light fades.

Have a third day?

Use it for bouldering, a longer walk through the outer precincts of the site (there are hundreds of monuments beyond the main clusters), a morning on the river or simply revisiting the key monuments with more time and less schedule pressure.

What to Eat in Hampi

• Banana pancakes & traveller cafés: The restaurants along Hampi Bazaar serve a good mix of Indian, continental and backpacker-friendly food.
• Thali meals: Several local restaurants near the main site serve simple, affordable Karnataka thali meals.
• Fresh juice: The banana and sugarcane juice stalls near Virupaksha Temple are worth stopping at.
• Mango season (April–May): Local Hampi mangoes are excellent if you visit in late spring.

Travel Tips for Hampi

• Start the main sightseeing by 7–8am — the heat builds quickly in most months.
• Hire a guide for at least one day — the architectural and historical context transforms the experience.
• Carry water at all times, especially in summer. There are very few shade options on the main route.
• Moped or cycle hire is far more efficient than walking the entire spread-out site.
• Respect the active temple at Virupaksha — it is not a museum, it is a living place of worship.
• Dress modestly for temple visits. Shoes must be removed at all active shrines.
• Photography of people in active worship areas requires sensitivity and, in some places, is restricted.
• Book accommodation in advance for October–January. Hampi is popular and good options fill up.
