Why Visit Coorg?

Coorg sits at the heart of Karnataka's coffee belt and is one of the most atmospheric hill destinations in South India. The combination of plantation landscapes, cool climate, scenic drives, waterfalls and a distinct local culture (the Kodava community) makes it feel genuinely different from other hill stations.

It is not just a place to tick off viewpoints. Coorg is best experienced slowly — a morning walk through a coffee estate, an afternoon at a waterfall, a quiet evening with the hills to yourself.

Best Places to Visit in Coorg

1. Abbey Falls

One of Coorg's most visited natural attractions, Abbey Falls is a scenic waterfall set within private plantation land. It is most impressive after the rains, and the approach road through coffee and spice estates is part of the experience. Go early to avoid the busiest part of the day.

2. Raja's Seat

A popular viewpoint garden in Madikeri town that offers panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys. The name comes from the Kodava kings who used it as a resting point. Sunsets and misty mornings make this an atmospheric spot.

3. Madikeri Fort

A historic fort in the heart of Madikeri town, originally built in the 17th century. The fort now houses government offices and a church, but its walls, views and history are worth exploring for anyone interested in Coorg's past.

4. Namdroling Monastery (Golden Temple), Bylakuppe

About 35 km from Madikeri, Namdroling Monastery is one of the largest Tibetan Buddhist settlements outside Tibet. The Golden Temple complex is visually stunning and spiritually serene. It is a genuinely unique experience in Karnataka.

5. Talacauvery

The origin point of the Kaveri river, set high in the Brahmagiri hills. Talacauvery is a combination of natural beauty, spiritual significance and scenic hill landscape. The drive up is itself a highlight.

6. Iruppu Falls

A beautiful waterfall near the Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary. Combined with the sanctuary and nearby forest walks, Iruppu is a good destination for a longer day trip. Check current forest access rules before visiting.

7. Dubare Elephant Camp

Located on the banks of the Kaveri river, Dubare is a camp managed by the Karnataka Forest Department where visitors can interact with elephants under supervised conditions. It is one of the more responsible wildlife experiences in the region. Book ahead, especially during holidays.

8. Mandalpatti Viewpoint

A high altitude viewpoint above the clouds near Madikeri, accessible by jeep. When the mist sits below the hill, the view is exceptional. Best attempted early morning and in the season between October and March.

9. Brahmagiri Trek

A moderately challenging trek through shola forests on the Karnataka–Kerala border. The trail offers forest canopy, hill views and biodiversity. Follow current trekking permits and guide requirements before attempting the trail.

10. Coffee & Spice Estate Tours

No Coorg trip is complete without a proper estate tour. Many plantation stays and resorts offer guided walks covering coffee, pepper, cardamom, vanilla and arecanut. Ask your stay for a tour — or seek out a dedicated estate experience separately.

2-Day Coorg Itinerary

Day 1 — Madikeri & Waterfalls

• Morning: Arrive, check in to your estate stay or resort. Explore the plantation if your property offers a morning walk.
• Late morning: Abbey Falls — go early before it gets crowded.
• Afternoon: Madikeri town — Raja's Seat, Madikeri Fort, local market.
• Evening: Sunset from Raja's Seat or a scenic viewpoint near your stay.

Day 2 — Hills, Monastery & Wildlife

• Early morning: Mandalpatti jeep trip — check mist forecast and book a jeep the evening before.
• Mid morning: Drive towards Dubare Elephant Camp or Iruppu Falls depending on preference.
• Afternoon: Namdroling Monastery at Bylakuppe — allow at least 90 minutes.
• Evening: Return to stay, a relaxed estate evening or early dinner in Madikeri.

Have a third day?

Use it for Talacauvery (the Kaveri river source), a longer trek, deeper plantation exploration or a drive along the scenic border roads towards Kerala.

• Pandi curry: A signature Kodava pork dish cooked with kachampuli (Coorg vinegar) — the most iconic local food experience.
• Akki rotti: Rice flatbread enjoyed with chutneys or curries.
• Kadambuttu: Steamed rice dumplings, a traditional Kodava staple.
